Rasan Piya is a documentary on the Hindustani classical vocalist Ustad Abdul Rashid Khan — the sixteenth generation of Miyan Tansen’s lineage, who never stopped composing, teaching, travelling or performing across India for as long as he lived. He died on February 18, 2016, at the age of 107.

It is the portrait of an extraordinary musician, poet and teacher — a man who not only guarded an ancient art but added to it, and who overcame the limits of his own body to make beauty and to light the way for a generation behind him. The film traces the currents that shaped a life steeped in the culture of Awadh, and turns, along the way, into a quiet meditation on how Indian art shifted as the riyasats and their patronage faded. Above all, it draws us toward the guru-shishya parampara — the teacher-student bond — as kept by one of its most revered hands.
